BOOK REVIEW
It’s not often that I get to meet the author of a book. I met J. Elliott when I was on the Buddha retreat. We were roommates, I was lying on the top bunk and she was telling me that she had written a book of ghost stories. I sat up straight, “Did you say ghost stories?” I knew I had to read it. Like Elliott, I had grown up reading scary books and I credit my love of reading to the Tales From the Crypt comic books. Sounds a little strange for two yogis, but we are both free spirits with open minds.
I had never met J. Elliott before the retreat (in this life), and was surprised at the similarities that put me in the same location in some of her stories. There is a story of I-4 near Orlando that used to be one of my haunts (pun intended) as I grew up in Orlando. And the Palatka version of a haunted corn maze...I live in Hastings, Florida but I work at the Palatka Prison, 10 minutes from my home….spooky!
Most impressive was her ability to transition from teenager lingo of today's world to the dialect of a story that took place in 1904. I have one more thing to say without giving away all the plots. Her feature story Ghost Lite had me feeling empathy for a four-hundred year old lantern with a soul. I highly recommend this book, and I’m sure there will be many more from this author.
